Welcome to Briar, Sweat and Tears! This is the website of pipe maker Todd Bannard, or
“Sasquatch” as I am known on most of the pipe forums.
If you are here, probably you know the routine. For those who are unsure, here's the basic idea. I started learning to make pipes about 2008. The magic that occurs when you manage to fit a stem to a chunk of briar was immediately addictive, and I've been "working" at it ever since. It isn't work, I don't want it to be. The result of a few years of studying and mostly bugging other pipe makers is that I now make perfectly adequate pipes in many ways. And if that doesn't sound like much of a sales pitch, you're right.
But the truth is, that's what I do here. There are pipe makers who cut finer buttons, who blast better, finish better. What I do here is make pipes with the intention that they are highly useable, have a little personality, and provide a better than average smoking experience. I do a LOT of hand-work, I cut every stem from rod, and I use the best materials I can find.
Other than a thousand tiny boring details, that's all there is to it. I can give you a "finest Mediterranean briar" sales pitch if it makes you feel good. But if that's your bent, you'll be happier with a pipe full of fancy stampings and grades, and assurances that your briar was picked by virgin faeries on a moonlit night. My briar was cut by big tough Greek guys. Or maybe they pay the faeries, I really don't know.
If you're still reading this, we'll get along fine from here on in. I hope you enjoy looking at my pipes, I hope you find one you like and buy it, and I hope it's your favorite pipe for ever and ever. I work pretty hard to make them so, and nothing leaves the shop that I wouldn't be happy to buy and own myself. That's the guarantee. There's no secrets here, no bullshit, no real pitch and pretty often no product to go with it.
If that works for you, a BST might just be in your future.
